History of Bedfordshire

Bedfordshire is a county located in the East of England, with a history that dates back to prehistoric times. During the Roman period, the area was part of the territory known as Britannia and was home to several settlements and fortifications. One of the most notable was the Roman town of Luton, which served as a center of trade and commerce. In the Anglo-Saxon era, the region came under the control of the Kingdom of Mercia, which established several settlements, including Bedford, which would later become the county town of Bedfordshire. During the Norman Conquest in the 11th century, the area was granted to William the Conqueror’s followers and became part of the feudal system.
